Ah.. I was getting the chess angle but didn’t know what to do with it.  I figure since I knew i came from room 43, that was out. The srory talked about paw prints and not following the culprit. You can clearly see a leg and foot in the doorway of 33.  The paw prints scratch the sides of two paintings, which are both square. If you count all the sides of the tiles on the bottom floor, it equals 36.
