In the initial version of the book, a misprint occurred in the example on the left hand page. The strip “= + = +” should have read “= + = -“, such that the line “6 = 8 + 2” reads “6 = 8 – 2”.
However this does not affect the actual puzzle on the right hand page.
LuigiI am surprised not to see more forum entries for 22. This one seems to stand out for the sheer number of possible permutations even when taking into account some of the built-in limitations such the only two strips that can be used in the first position and the fact that only one of them can be rotated. Still even with these limitations and some of the rules for mathematical syntax there are a staggering amount of permutations to try. I have completed the first codex book and other puzzle books with my siblings and we are all stumped by this one. We are curious to know if someone has found a line of reasoning that allows to find the solution without the need for extensive manipulations.
P.S. I have the revised version of the book.
CookieLuigi – you are right, there are too many permutations and if there is a better method, I couldn’t find it.
I gave up and read the answer…..
ChristoI loved this puzzle. It took a lot of work, but I think I figured out some logical steps.
SpoilerThe strip with a four at the top can’t be flipped and has to be the first or last strip.
It doesn’t take too much checking to realize it can’t go first, so it must go last.
Figuring out how to have one equals sign per row is important too.
From there, it was a lot of guess and check.
[collapse]CoffeeLadyI am stumped. I think I have the first & last figured out, as people have mentioned, but the multiplication part is throwing me off most of all.
